Virgin America says it's about to change the face of U.S. air travel. The upstart airline has been given the green light by the U.S. Department of Transportation to begin operations, and is now selling tickets to San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and Las Vegas. Service to San Diego will be added a bit later. Virgin America is promising low fares, excellent service and perks such as brand-new planes with cutting-edge in-flight entertainment, leather seats, massage chairs and mood lighting. The airline plans to serve 10 U.S. cities within a year of operation and up to 30 cities within five years.
